Confirm with your DLC whether you will use a per diem or detailed expensing for your expenses before traveling.
Discuss international expensing

International travelers can choose to collect a per diem—a flat sum per day to cover meals, lodging, and incidental expenses—instead of detailed expense reporting. Unlike domestic travelers, international travelers do not need approval for this option from VPF Travel and Card Services, however, you must work out details with your DLC before embarking on a trip.

If you do use the per diem option, you should not charge lodging, meals, and incidental expenses to the MIT Travel Card. You will need to use personal funds for these expenses.

You can use the MIT Travel Card before your trip for airfare, conference fees, or other pre-travel expenses. These expenses must be filed in a Travel Expense Report within 60 days after the completion of your trip. You cannot file a Travel Expense Report before the trip.

Understand rate structure

Per diem rates may not exceed the U.S. Department of State, Office of Allowances ceiling rates for foreign travel. Check this site before each trip as the rates vary by country.  Note: Security settings in Firefox may prevent you from opening this page. Try Safari or Chrome.
