VPF HR/Payroll handles W-2 and other payroll tax forms. Accounts Payable processes tax forms for independent contractors. See details below.

View W-2 Tax Form online

If you are an active MIT employee or student, you can view your Annual Wage and Tax Statement W-2 Form on Atlas. When you log in, click on About Me in the top horizontal menu. You’ll find a link for W-2 Forms under Money Matters in the left-hand menu.

If you have not already opted to receive an electronic W-2 Form you will be prompted to opt-in when you elect your MIT benefits or view your paystubs via Atlas.

Your W-2 Form is available on Atlas by the last week in January for the previous calendar year.

Receive a printed W-2 Form in the mail

If you have opted to receive your printed W-2 Form through the mail, please know that beginning with tax year 2020, MIT will be using ADP Payroll Services to print and mail your W-2 Form. Watch for your W-2 Form in your USPS mail in late January for the previous calendar year. It will arrive in a standard two-window envelope, with “Massachusetts Institute of Technology” and MIT’s mailing address (77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA) appearing in the upper left window as the sender.

The format of the ADP-generated W-2 Form is slightly different from the MIT-generated W-2. It contains all of the required information you will need to file your federal and state tax returns.

If you prefer to receive a paper W-2 Form after opting in, submit a Withdrawal of Consent to Electronic W-2 Form or go to Atlas > About Me> Money Matters> W-2 Forms. You always have the option to return to paperless status.

Calculate taxable gross pay

Your W-2 Form displays your Taxable Earnings rather than your Gross pay as shown on your paystub. You can reconcile the Taxable Earnings on your W-2 Form with the Gross Pay on your paystub using the following formula:

FE = GP - PtD

Federal Earnings (in Box 1 of your W-2) equals

Gross Pay on your final paystub of the tax year minus

your Pre-tax Deductions

Pre-tax deductions can include: health insurance, dental and vision coverage, Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Health Savings Account (HSA), your contributions to your 401(k) plan, parking fees, and MBTA Commuter Rail passes.

Tax Forms 1099R, 1042S, and 1099M

Tax Forms 1099R,1042S, and 1099M are not available online.

If you are a retiree, you can expect to receive a 1099R Form in your USPS mail in late January for the previous calendar year. Contact VPF HR/Payroll if you need a replacement 1099R.

If you are a foreign national with fellowship payments or covered by a tax treaty, you will receive a 1042S Form in your USPS mail in late February for the previous calendar year. Contact VPF HR/Payroll if you need a replacement 1042S.

If you are an independent contractor or an employee who received taxable reimbursement payments, you will receive a 1099M Form from VPF Accounts Payable in your USPS mail in late January for the previous calendar year. If you need a replacement 1099M contact VPF Accounts Payable.
