Insurance Deductible Increases Effective September 1

Publication Date

Starting on September 1, 2022, MIT's internal deductibles for insurance will change as follows:

1. Campus property will increase from $1,000 to $2,500

2. Fleet vehicles and rental vehicles will increase from $1,000 to $2,500. Using an MIT Preferred rental agency can reduce the deductible you pay in the event of an accident in a rental vehicle, as detailed below.

Use Preferred vendors when renting a car

You can avoid paying insurance deductibles by renting from MIT Preferred vendors Avis or Budget. Our negotiated agreements automatically provide insurance coverage. There is no need to purchase additional insurance. This coverage is in effect in all U.S. states except Alaska and is not in effect in Puerto Rico. (Optional insurance should always be purchased on international rentals.)

If you are in an accident with an Avis or Budget rental vehicle and are not at fault, the deducible is waived. If you are at fault in an accident, your department will be charged the deductible. Use Concur, MIT’s online travel booking and expense reporting tool to rent directly from Avis or Budget.

Renting a car from non-Preferred vendors

If you rent a vehicle from a rental company other than Avis or Budget and are in an accident, your department will be charged the deductible, no matter who is at fault in the accident.

If you rent from a company other than Avis or Budget and you purchase additional insurance, this cost will not be reimbursed by MIT.
