Forging a Career Path Through Finance

We interviewed six current and former VPF staff members and asked them to share what they have learned about growing their career at MIT.

Diversity and Inclusion

VPF promotes a workplace that welcomes people of varying backgrounds, viewpoints, talents, and ideas.

MIT strives to create an environment in which differences in race, gender, ethnicity, age, physical abilities, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation are respected and embraced. VPF’s wonderfully diverse community reflects that commitment, and our staff members are active in numerous diversity initiatives around campus. These include Employee Resource Groups, which are made up of staff who share common interests, issues, or backgrounds; the MIT Diversity Forum; the Council for Staff Diversity and Inclusion; and the Council on Family and Work. We follow MIT’s example of fostering a culture that promotes fairness and respect for diverse ideas and points of view.

Growth and Development

We are committed to our employees’ career advancement, both within VPF and beyond.

VPF continually works to provide opportunities for employees to receive thoughtful input toward their career development. We encourage staff members to pursue professional development opportunities, such as workshops, conferences, and fellowships, and to take advantage of MIT’s generous Tuition Assistance Plan.

Recognition Program

VPF’s success depends on the contributions and dedication of our employees.

Our Recognition Program provides a variety of ways to show appreciation for VPF staff. Sometimes a simple VPF thank you note to a colleague gets the message across. For a more formal expression of gratitude, VPF offers framed certificates to recognize a noteworthy contribution of a colleague.

The annual VPF Infinite Mile Awards recognize members of the VPF community for their overall impact and contributions to MIT. Those who receive an award, which includes a trophy and cash prize, can feel especially proud knowing that they are being honored based on a nomination from their colleagues.

The MIT Excellence Awards are among the highest honors awarded to staff by MIT. These formal, Institute-wide awards acknowledge the extraordinary efforts made by members of our community toward fulfilling the goals, values, and mission of the Institute. VPF has been honored to count several of its staff among the recipients of these prestigious awards year after year.

At VPF, we work hard, but we also have fun.

Throughout the year, VPF staff members get together for a variety of activities: there’s an ice cream party, a bake-off, bimonthly breakfast gatherings, and an annual Halloween celebration, a staff favorite that includes trick-or-treating for family and friends.

Community outreach and support are important parts of the VPF culture. Strengthening bridges across and beyond VPF, we connect with our Cambridge neighborhood and find ways to contribute to the local community. Recent activities have included a school supply drive to benefit the East End House and a food drive for the Margaret Fuller House.
