Carbon Dioxide Gas Shortage Affecting Airgas and Messer Supply to MIT

Publication Date
9/1/2022

There is currently a national shortage of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas in the U.S due to the loss of feed gas supply at production plants.  As a result, Airgas and Messer, MIT’s Preferred Suppliers of CO2, have alerted VPF Strategic Sourcing that its contracts are now under Force Majeure, which means due to this unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstance, both suppliers cannot guarantee they can fully meet their contractual requirements to MIT regarding the delivery of CO2.

Airgas and Messer may be able to provide you with up to 70 percent of your normal monthly product consumption.

During this period of Force Majeure, labs may source CO2 from third-party suppliers after requesting and receiving written consent from Airgas and Messer. Contact Jim Bagley for details on reaching these suppliers with this request.

VPF Strategic Sourcing will notify you when the Force Majeure period is lifted.

For any gas supply or delivery-related issues, contact Jim Bagley, VPF strategic sourcing analyst, for laboratory equipment and supplies at jbagley@mit.edu or 617-324-8162.
