Disposition of Equipment


  • If you wish to deactivate an item, send an email to Vietnam Le. Include the MIT tag number (seven digit barcode) or serial number, reason for the deactivation (i.e. broken, obsolete) and your contact information.
  • If you wish to donate an item, the steps are the same as above. Additionally, include the name of the non-profit that will receive the donation. We also request that the Property Office receive a copy of any acknowledgement you may receive. We forward these to the Vice President’s Office.
  • If you wish to gift an item to an employee or student, follow the above process.
  • Once an item is deactivated, a red deactivated tag will be sent to the contact person to be affixed to the item.

Selling of Equipment

  • Contact Michael F. McCarthy, Property Manager, with the MIT tag number of the item you wish to purchase. He will determine the current market price and give you further instructions to complete the purchase.
  • If you are selling an item outside MIT, contact Michael F. McCarthy, Property Manager, with the MIT tag number of the item you are selling. Provide the contact information of the buyer for invoicing.
  • If you have an item you wish to sell but don’t have a buyer, contact Michael F. McCarthy, Property Manager, with the MIT tag number of the item, the condition of the item, the contact person for any buyer inquiries and any other pertinent information. The Property Office will put the item on bid.

Trade-in of Equipment

  • If you wish to trade-in an item, send an email to JoAnne Chute, Property Manager. Include the MIT tag number (seven digit barcode) or serial number and the Purchase Order number of the new item.
