The Procurement Department has developed a tool referred to as the inverted triangle strategy. The basic premise of this strategy is to help the Institute identify the optimal purchasing tools in order to get the best overall value for each dollar spent.
shopMIT is a collaborative project between many MIT internal providers. The focus is to make it easier for the MIT community to find the products and services offered within MIT. The internal providers taking part in the shopMIT program are dedicated to excellence in customer service and product quality.
The following internal providers have services that can be ordered through SAPweb.
Procurement has developed partnership agreements with several suppliers. These partners provide the community with many of the items most commonly requested and allow MIT to streamline the purchasing process, improve efficiencies and reduce costs.
Purchasing authorization requirements
The ability to create a requisition, use ECAT or the MIT Procurement Card is contingent upon having the proper authorizations. All authorizations are granted by the person in your department known as the primary authorizer. If you do not know who the primary authorizers are in your department, you can find a listing at of department authorizers.
This is a brief overview of the authorization requirements for the respective tasks. More extensive definitions of these authorizations can be found at authorization requirements.
ECAT or SAPWeb requisitions
Both are electronic processes integrated with the MIT SAP system. The basic authorizations required for anyone using these systems are Can Use SAP, Can Spend and Commit, and Can Requisition. These authorizations will allow a user to create a requisition that will then go through the department's approval process. This approval process is known as a release strategy. Every department at the Institute must select a release strategy, and most have chosen one of the four basic models. No requisition will be processed or viewed by Procurement until it has received all the necessary approvals.
