About the Cashier


The hours for the the Cashier are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 1 pm.

Functions of the Cashier:

Incoming Cash and Check Deposits

  • Deposits of checks and cash from sponsored research, departments, labs and centers, as well as student organizations are handled by the Cashier. These deposits may be dropped off at building NE49-3077, Monday through Friday, 9 am - 1 pm.

Petty Cash Envelopes

The procedures for petty cash reimbursement are as follows (effective September 17, 2007):

  • Send in the Petty Cash Envelope through inter-office mail to AP Janet Mulstay -- NE49-4064; ensure that you include all your receipts and code the costs to the proper GL accounts.
  • Upon review of the receipts and charges, you will be notified via email that your reimbursement money is ready for pick up at the Cashier. Please allow 3-5 days for reimbursement.
  • If you elect to drop off your Petty Cash Envelope to the Cashier, you WILL NOT receive reimbursement at that time; you will be notified when the money is ready for pick up.

Petty Cash Slips

  • Petty cash slips up to $50 will be handled by the Cashier until an alternative method is developed. Proper identification is required to redeem petty cash slips from the Cashier. Petty cash slips over $50 need to be submitted to Accounts Payable on a request for payment form for reimbursement.

Human Subject Vouchers

  • Human subject vouchers will be handled by the Cashier until an alternative method is developed. Proper identification is needed to redeem the human subject voucher.

Merchant Services

How to obtain the following services, which are no longer provided by the Cashier:

  • Cashing Checks: The Cashier will not cash personal checks, MIT reimbursement checks, MIT travel advance checks or MIT Credit Union checks.
  • Selling Traveler’s Checks: Traveler’s checks may be purchased at the Bank of America branch in the Student Center (W20). The MIT Credit Union also offers Traveler's checks.
  • Distributing MIT Payroll Checks: Payroll checks may be picked up in Payroll in Building NE49-3131.
  • Distributing MIT Travel Advance Checks: You may pick up travel advance checks at Building NE49 4th floor reception desk or request that it be mailed to the department or traveler. If mailed, please allow sufficient time to receive the travel advance check before the trip is taken.
  • MBTA Passes: MBTA passes are sold at the Parking & Transportation Office, E32-105, on the last three business days of the month, 8 am to 5:30 pm. Regular operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Master and Ph.d Thesis: The cost of master thesis and Ph.D thesis will appear on a student's bill from Student Services.
  • Course Notes: Course packs are available at the Copy Tech Center, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
  • MIT Hobby Shop: You may now make membership fees and other Hobby Shop payments at the Hobby Shop. See Hobby Shop>>
